South Florida Joins Nationwide Effort to Fight Cystic Fibrosis – A Life-Threatening Genetic Disease
3,000 local participants are expected to walk 3.1 miles to raise funds for CF research and care
South Florida – The Florida Chapter- South Florida office of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will host five Great Strides Walks throughout South Florida as part of the largest national event to raise funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis, a rare, genetic disease that progressively limits the ability to breathe and ultimately causes premature death.
Great Strides, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraising event offers hope to those living with cystic fibrosis. Each year, more than 125,000 people participate in nearly 400 walks across the country to support the Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis and raise awareness about this rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that makes it difficult to breathe. Because of funds raised from Great Strides, people with CF are living longer, healthier lives and pursuing their dreams.
“Great Strides provides a fantastic opportunity for family, friends, students, and colleagues to come together and make a difference in the lives of people with CF.” said Ali Bethel, executive director of the South Florida office. “When we first began, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people in our community are living long enough to achieve milestones like graduating high school, getting married and starting families. While we have come so far, the lives of people with this disease are still cut far too short. Great Strides harnesses the power of people with a shared vision and encourages collaboration, team building, and leadership, as we take steps to find a cure. The time is now. Together, we can conquer this disease. Until it’s done.”
